How to choose the right Personal Protective Equipment

  • Assess the specific risks in your operation, such as splashes, chemicals, hot oil or cleaning agents, and match PPE to those hazards.
  • Choose eye protection with wraparound coverage and a secure fit if staff work near flying particles or liquid splashes.
  • Select apron length and width to give full torso coverage while allowing staff to move freely around the kitchen or site.
  • Use colour-coded aprons, such as blue for raw food or allergen areas, to support your HACCP and hygiene procedures.
  • Consider how often items will be changed during shifts and ensure you have sufficient quantities for busy service periods.
  • Check that PPE is compatible with other clothing and uniforms your team already uses.

Care and maintenance

  • Store safety glasses and other reusable PPE in a clean, dry area away from grease and chemicals when not in use.
  • Clean lenses regularly with non-abrasive wipes or mild soapy water to maintain clear vision and avoid scratching.
  • Inspect PPE frequently for cracks, tears or wear and replace any damaged items immediately.
  • Dispose of single-use aprons after each task or shift to maintain hygiene and prevent cross-contamination.
  • Train staff on correct fitting, removal and disposal of PPE to maximise protection and compliance.
  • Keep a documented schedule for checking stock levels so you never run short during peak service.
