How to choose the right Kitchen Utensils

  • Consider capacity and size, from small whisks and jugs for single portions to larger mixing bowls and serving spoons for bulk production.
  • Choose materials to suit your operation, such as stainless steel for durability, polypropylene for lightweight handling and silicone for non-stick cookware.
  • Match utensils to your menu style, including BBQ utensils, pizza tools, meat preparation utensils and fish utensils where required.
  • Look for ergonomic handles, hanging loops and colour coding to support safe, efficient service and clear organisation on busy shifts.
  • For high-volume sites, prioritise commercial-grade utensils that are heat resistant, dishwasher safe and proven to withstand daily use.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean utensils promptly after service, following manufacturer guidance and using commercial dishwashers where suitable.
  • Avoid abrasive pads on soft plastics or coated surfaces to prevent scratching and harbouring of bacteria.
  • Inspect handles, joints and moving parts on can openers, tongs and scissors regularly, replacing worn or damaged items immediately.
  • Store utensils dry and organised on rails, in utensil pots or drawer inserts to prevent contamination and speed up access during service.
  • Use colour-coded utensils where applicable to support HACCP procedures and reduce cross-contamination risks.
  • Periodically review your utensil set, retiring warped, bent or stained items and standardising models to simplify training and replacement.
